Things you need to consider when buying a Treadmill.

Which Type of treadmill is right for you.

  • Do you Jog / walk then a Manual treadmill may be more suited to you. Not as robust as a motorized treadmill but would suit your needs as a walker / jogger.

The belt should be narrower than 17/ 18 inches.

  • Do you Run then a Motorized / Folding treadmill may suit you because if you are only running a few times a week you may want to fold it away when not in use. Look for a treadmill that will go up to 10mph or more.

  • Do you Training then a Motorized treadmill would be the type you should consider, because you would be more likely to be use the treadmill every day and you would be looking for a treadmill with longevity in mind. The more powerful the motor the better it will perform at higher speeds.
  • The great thing about having a treadmill at home is you can create a healthy lifestyle for the whole family. If the whole family is using the treadmill a more robust treadmill would be suitable for the whole family.

  • Exercise in private. Having your own piece of workout equipment at home allows you to exercise at your own pace and time through out the day.

How Treadmills Work.

  • In simple basic terms the Electric Treadmill is powered by electricity which powers the drive motor. So you will need a power point close by. The drive motor is connected to the running belt via a smaller belt which is attached to the rollers. The Treadmills speed is controlled by two computers. One embedded in the top console and the other under your lower front cover. Together they control operation of the treadmill.

Treadmill key features.

  • Treadmill Belt.

If you are walking then a treadmill with a short narrow belt would suit you, but if you are tall and you will be using the treadmill for running with long strides then you should be looking for a treadmill with a belt length up to 55/ 60 inches in length and 20 inches wide to give you plenty of running space. We recommend a 2-ply belt.

There are treadmills on the market that are supersized with a bulletproof frame and a supersize belt measuring 63 inches by 22 inches.

  • Treadmill Deck / Cushioning.

A treadmill with an excellent cushioning arrangement will absorb the shock and impact form the running motion. Which in turn will give the runner less fatigue. You don’t want the belt to move around every time the foot strikes the deck.

  • Treadmill Horse power to weight ratio.

Horse power and weight have a correlation with each other, the heavier you are the more horse power that will be need to move the belt.

If you are a larger person then you will need a treadmill with more horse power.

If you are under 170lbs then up to a 3CHP motor should be ok. As you go up in horse power so does the value of the treadmill. The very top of the range treadmill have motors with horse power up as high as 8.0hp peak and a weigh capacity of 500 pounds.

  • Treadmill Control Panel.

The screen comes in all shape and sizes. They can have up to 14 Displays. A set of workout programs. You will find your operational controls on your control panel. Incline controls, USB ports, Speed buttons, Keypad, Blue tooth and stop button just to name a few. As well a heart rate monitoring

  • Treadmill Programs.

The programs can be endless. Can simulate the outside environment without the weather e.g. running up hills, Hiking workout, Fat burning workout, Cardio, Strength.

  • Treadmill Speed.

The speed range can differ from brand to brand and models within the brand.

If your plan is to use the treadmill for mostly running then you need to purchase a treadmill which will go up to 9 mph or higher.

  • Treadmill Incline /Decline.

Do you want your treadmill to simulate incline and decline, both uphill and downhill?

If you are an eager uphill walker / runner then the incline mode on the treadmill would be at the top of your list when searching for your key features. A decline attribute gives a great duplication of the outdoor environment also.

  • Treadmill Stability.

The treadmill should be stable when performing the activities on your new treadmill.

The cheaper the treadmill the fragile the frame. The treadmill should remain stable at all times while in use.

  • Treadmill Space / Storage.

How much room do you have? A folding treadmill maybe your best option if you live in an apartment, small home or planned to use it in your work environment.

Most treadmills take up a small amount of space, they would fit in most homes. Having said that please check the size from the spec’s just to make sure the treadmill will fit in your desired location.

  • Treadmill Budget / Price.

How much would you like to spend? A treadmill will probably be the most, costly piece of exercise/training equipment you will buy. Take your time with your research. As the old saying goes you only get what you paid for. The same applies with treadmills. You are better of spending that little bit more and getting a treadmill that will last a long time. If you plan on walking / jogging then a treadmill under $1,200 should be fine. If you running / training most day then a treadmill over $ 1,200 would be more advisable.
